Tapasitos!

Tonight we ventured into Nürnberg for some tapas. We tried to get a reservation at our favorite tapas place La Barca in Erlangen, but they were full. John recommened Tapasitos, so I tried making a reservation there and they were able to take us at 8:00. It was fun to get out into Nürnberg since we hardly ever go there.

I love going to Spanish inspired places because it's great to see familiar words in Spanish on the menu! Although we can pretty much decipher the menu items in German now, it is easier for us in Spanish. I did bring my German-English dictionary just in case and John and I had a race to see who could find the meaning of the word "sahne" the quickest (him using his iphone and me doing it the old school way with my dictionary).

I won. Sahne means cream. I saw it in a drink description which included Amaretto, Baileys, Kahlua, chocolate, and cream. It sounded amazing, but I was the DD this evening. We did enjoy some sangria with dinner and surprisingly I wasn't allergic to it. I think I tolerate the wine better here because there aren't as many sulfates.

The restaurant had a cool ambiance with lots of interesting decorations like these:

Our dinner was great.

Afterwards, we met up with some adidas friends, Andre and Diana, who were interns in Oregon when we first moved there. They have a really cool apartment in Nürnberg with a great balcony, some nice big closets, and beautiful spiral staircase. Andre has his own man room for fixing bikes complete with his own mini fridge. I think John was a little jealous because I am the one who gets the extra room for my stuff in our apartment.

It's a trade off...since his clothes/shoes take up all the closet space in our bedroom, I get the guest room as my office and storage space for all my books. I think John misses the man space he had just acquired in our finished basement in Portland just before we left.

We hung out at their place for a bit then headed to a bar called Cantina for some more drinks. They shared with us that it's traditional in Germany to get Herren Gedeck which is a beer accompanied by a shot of schnaps, so that is what John wanted to try. It was fun to finally hang out with some friends who speak German because that is a good way for us to learn some more phrases and words. They both encouraged us to watch movies that we are familiar with in German with German subtitles so we can both hear the words and see them in print. I think that sounds like a great way to learn, so I will have to try it. I have to think of a movie that I know really well to experiement with....

Prost!
The custom is that when you cheers you have to look one another in the eye as you take the first sip.

Andre was writing down how to say "Excuse me please" because John and I mentioned that we have trouble with people who won't get out of the way...

Entschuldigen sie bitte.

Good to know.

Fun times.

You are speaking my food language Katie, I went to Spain in October and fell in love with Tapas and Sangria. I haven't found anything like it here in Bremen. Looks like you had a great night out!

And cream in Austria is Schlagobers..ha...which I had trouble whipping this past weekend for a pie...I was worried I had the wrong thing. Yes, Entshuldigung is probably my second most used word after danke! I get to have tapas tomorrow with my English ladies club...prob. nothing compared to Houston mexican, but still fun.
