German & Bagels

We got the Rosetta Stone as a gift from John's grandmother for Christmas! I am really hoping that it will jumpstart our German beyond hallo and danke! I am excited to start using it, but I didn't set it up tonight because I got distracted...

by these...

homemade bagels.

That's right.

I made them.

From scratch.

Fab.u.lous

The best part?

It was not hard...at all

and voila!

I got the idea because my friend Christina was disappointed that she cannot find good everything bagels here in Germany. Being the bakerella wannabe that I am, I decided to look up some recipes online to see exactly what making homemade bagels entails. I found a really simple one that had ingredients I could find here and after locating the bread flour at the Rewe store tonight, I was ready to go.

The whole process took a little more than an hour.

I was anticipating larger bagels, but I always have a grandiose vision of ginormous baked things and end up ruining recipes because I get over excited. I followed the recipe exactly, even though I was pretty sure the bagels would come out small. I was hoping they would rise and puff like the recipe said but that only happened a little bit.

With some of my baking disasters in mind, I would say they came out pretty darn good...and they got the John Toppel seal of approval, so I will definitely try them again!

We have Rosetta Stone and I'm ashamed to say I have not done as much as I should have. They make sure to have every ethnicity in there and I crack up when a full out Indian chief is telling me Auf Wiedersehen. Those bagels look delicious. For all the bread they have over here why don't they have bagels?!
