At my school, whenever a teacher has a birthday, he or she is supposed to bring in treats for everyone else to enjoy. Kind of reminds me of what the kids do in elementary school...
Today, there were treats on the counter from a woman whose birthday is tomorrow. Apparently, it was taboo that she brought her cookies today.
According to one of the German teachers, it is bad luck to celebrate your birthday before your actual birthday. Note to self: I am SO glad I am not German. Although I enjoy learning German traditions, this is one that I do not plan on adopting.
That's like saying that your birthday celebrations should be limited only to the day of your actual birthday! (Those of you who know me well know that my birthday celebrations are usually quite lengthy and begin as soon as John's birthday is technically over ::midnight June 20th::) and extend past my birthday encompassing a good two weeks. And why not? If you love your birthday, everyone else catches on and it ends up being a lot of fun.
I asked this teacher I was talking to what happens if you birthday happens to be on June 26th and the last day of school is June 25th? She said I would have to bring my treats the following school year.
Seriously?
That is not likely to happen...
so...when June rolls around, I am going to be the very American birthday loving, early birthday celebrating person that I am and bring my treats in on (gasp!) June 24th.

We've been celebrating Alex's birthday in September, because his birthday is in August and all his friends are away in Urlaub. The reason we don't celebrate in July is not because it is bad luck--I just learned this from you--but because Philip and I celebrate in June and then July is busy with end of the school year celebrations, recitals, etc. (Bavarian schools are in session until the end of July.) We, of course, celebrate as a family on the actual day, but the big party is in September, after classes resume. I wonder what parents would have said to me if we had celebrated one month early?!?!
