hard day's night

Wow, one week into daycare and Grace is already sick--that didn't take long. We thought maybe she was developing an ear infection because she has been pulling on one ear a bit and then last night she started to get congested and had a very hard time sleeping. We had some friends over for dinner and she probably woke up 6 times between 7 and 10. Then she was up about every two hours for the rest of the night. Finally she came into bed with us around 3:30 and slept on my chest for the rest of the night.

We recently switched to a new pediatrician, but the Broadway Medical Clinic is not open on the weekends. Fortunately, although John and Grace will no longer be covered under my work insurance because I am going part time, that doesn't go into affect until the end of September. So, this morning we drove down to the Beaverton Kaiser office because they have urgent care on the weekends. We had been there before on a Sunday when John fell and hurt his wrist while roller skating and we knew it was not nearly as crowded as the local Kaiser would be, so we got our sick baby in the car and headed down. All three of us were just a tad cranky...

We didn't have to wait very long and I was very happy to discover that the physician on duty today was none other than our very own Dr. Nava. Grace saw her twice in the N. Portland Kaiser prior to use switching to the new doctor. Very odd that we both ended up in Beaverton at the same time, but it was nice to have Grace checked out by a doctor who already knew her.

 getting her lungs checked

Grace's favorite part of the visit was playing with the crinkly paper on the table

Turns out, she doesn't have an ear infection and her lungs were totally clear. I had considered that we were just being overreactive new parents, but when your baby isn't feeling good and can't tell you what is wrong, I think it's normal to take every precaution you can. She definitely has a cold because she's sneezing a lot and her nose is pretty runny. But, it's just a run of the mill cold and nothing more. Dr. Nava did say if her symptoms don't let up then we should return after 72 hours to have her ears checked again because ear infections can develop with a common cold.

Our little peanut is sleeping now and hopefully she'll get a good long rest. And, hopefully we get in some naps today and some better sleep tonight. I start working again tomorrow!

Also, Grace weighed in today and she was 14 pounds 11 ounces, which is up 4 ounces from her 4 month visit just last week.
