ready freddy!

In the spring of 2008, my dad visited Portland during my spring break and gutted our kitchen on his birthday (in his nice traveling clothes nonetheless because the airline sent his bag to PHX instead of PDX). He spent the next week working his butt off and personally remodeling a beautiful new kitchen for us complete with granite countertops and stainless steal appliances. It was a family affair, we all put blood, sweat, and much burrito eating into that kitchen and it is my pride and joy. The entire project took longer than the week my dad was there because of a certain incident with Lowe's that we won't talk about, but when it was done, it was a beauty.
Much excellent baking of cake balls was done in that kitchen!

When we went on our look see trip in Germany, saying I was less than enthused with German kitchens would be a complete understatement. John loves to tell everyone the story about me (in the midst of a complete meltdown) proclaiming, "are these appliances made for elves?" For some reason when John tells it, he sprinkles lots of profanity into that statement. Funny how we remember the same moment differently....

Anyway, the sinks in Germany are small, the fridges are small, the ovens are small
When we first saw apartments, I felt like Snow White visiting the house belonging to the 7 Dwarves. Everything was so small! Definitely not something to entice me to move to Germany when that would mean leaving my brand new kitchen filled with memories and awesomeness.

Traditionally, when moving people move in Germany, they take their kitchens too. When you rent a space, the kitchen is a completely empty box with nothing at all included.
No sink. No fridge. No oven.
Not even tiny ones!

We were lucky enough to find a place that came with a kitchen included, but due to the brand newness of the apartment we chose, the kitchen had not yet been installed. We didn't get to pick it out, but knowing that it would be brand new was definitely a plus for us.

We were told the kitchen would be installed early in October.
When we signed the contract, we were told mid to late October.
When we got the keys, we were told October 22nd.
When we moved in, we were told November 9th.
Finally, we were told November 12th.

After months of torture... first a tiny hotel kitchen, then a slightly larger hotel kitchen, and finally a "temporary kitchen" which has been the bane of my existence since moving into our cozy German apartment, the time has finally come.

Tomorrow our real kitchen will be installed.

::cue the angelic voices singing:: HALLELUJA!!!

If they don't come tomorrow, I will need to be checked into an institution.

the kitchen is empty and ready to rock and roll at 8 am
all of the contents that belong in the kitchen are inanimate mayhem in the living room
yikes!
stay tuned...

You have my sympathies. How you have held your sanity thus far is the question. As if moving to a new country isn't enough of a challenge. Soon, you will have a beautiful new kitchen. Please take a photo so we can all enjoy it with you!
