Nürburger Christkindlesmarkt

Today I went to the opening of the Christmas Market in Nürnberg with some friends. It was so fun and definitely got me into the holiday spirit.

teacher friends!

There is a big presentation of the Christkindle who is like a Christmas Angel. In Germany, they believe that she comes on Christmas Eve to deliver presents.
A little video

The appearance of the Christkindle angel is a big deal and signifies the official start of the Christmas Market season. Many girls tryout for the honor of being the angel. There was a choir of children below the balcony that the angel was on. I loved it when they sang Silent Night. Even though it was in German, it sounded the same! (After listening again, I can't actually make out if they are singing in German or not. It might be English--bad sound quality, but when I was there I swore it was in German...)

Lots of goodies to eat!
Lebkuchen (gingerbread) cookies are a big deal at the market.
They don't make gingerbread men though, the cookies are either round or sometimes shaped like hearts or other festive images.

There are tons of booths at the market with handmade items.
These little cuties are made of walnuts and dried plums.

A tennis player in honor of John!

The half-meter sausages were quite interesting!
We stood right next to this booth for the entire presentation of the angel.

There was also a separate area of the market for kids.

Also lots of neat toys, crafts, and things to look at

Stille Nacht (Silent Night) is always sung in German here, because it was originally written in German. It sounds like English because so many of the words are close to English: stille=silent, Nacht=night, heilige=holy, etc.

So cute. Ours looks almost exactly the same. And the cookies...everywhere. I love Christmas abroad!
