Last night we went over to our friend Christy's place to watch the Canada versus USA gold medal ice hockey game.
Can you tell where Christy is from??
Our group consisted of Team Toppel and Jill from the US (We heart PDX!) and Christy, Christina, Tara, & Baby Matt on the Canadian side. Now I will totally admit I was only in it for the snacks (3 varieties of potato chips and Girl Scout Cookies!), but other attendees were taking the game very seriously. Smack talk was flying back and forth between the US side and the Canada side. Christy's friend Lutz was there as well and he is German, so technically he was neutral territory, but given the red shirt he had on, I think we know who he sided with...
Check out Team Canada (and the cutest little fan ever!)
Do you see how he is holding the flag!?
I think Matt loved the nice massage he was getting from Jill more than the game!
Team USA was outnumbered, but still spirited!
We are attempting to spell out U.S.A
I am cursing the fact that I left my American Flag pants in Portland!
What was I thinking when I moved to Germany and left those pants behind?
The game was on in German, so John rigged up the computer to broadcast the commentary in English, but the timing was off, so we settled on just listening in German. Watching sports in German!? I died and went to heaven.... When there was less than a minute to go, with Canada ahead 2:1, the trash talking was at an all time high. Threats of which American teachers would be sporting Canada jerseys and jackets today at school were flying and the Canadian flags were a'waving. Much to the dismay of our boastful Canadian friends, Team USA scored a goal with 24 seconds left in the game and there was an additional sudden death overtime period. Twenty more minutes were added to the clock and both Jill and I made comments revealing to the rest of the crowd our completely absent knowledge of the game of hockey. The only thing that comes to my mind when I hear hockey is the 1 million dollar engagement ring that Miss Hilary Duff's hockey playing bf gave her recently. Yeah, I know. Sportsfan, I am not!
Can't blame the kiddo...some people think sports on TV are boring...
In the end, Team Canada was victorious.
Team USA went home exhausted (the game ended after midnight) and defeated.
But before we left John got in some snuggle time with his new little friend
(Somebody is going to make a really great daddy someday...)
SOMEDAY...don't get ahead of yourselves...
