Dachau

Our final stop of this weekend's getaway was the Dachau memorial site which was the location of the first concentration camp created during World War II. It was intense and interesting. It took us just about 3 hours to cover the grounds and the museum and view a film. I read and listened to so much history that I can't even put it into words. I can only say it was a great experience and definitely worth seeing. It really gave me a better understanding and perspective and reinforced for me what kind of person I want to be and what kind of person I don't want to be.

In the last photo you can see the cement foundations of what used to be the bunkers were the prisoners slept. Two were reconstructed to show what the conditions were like for prisoners inside. I didn't take photos of those or the crematoriums though because I just didn't feel right photographing something that was so horrible for the people who suffered as prisoners in these camps.

We saw people crying, people walking in silence, and other people who obviously didn't get the severity of this memorial. John is definitely the history buff of our little family, but I really appreciate the opportunity to learn more and share this experience with him.
