June Babies

June is a special month because both members of Team Toppel have birthdays. We are exactly one week apart and ever since he has been with me, John has slowly started to learn how to do birthdays right. This year, we adopted a new June baby friend whose birthday is one week before John's. We are about to embark on three birthday weekends in a row!

Jill is having a very special birthday this weekend, so she, Christina and I are taking a girls' weekend trip to Prague to celebrate. Because it is German tradition to bring some treats to work when it's your birthday, we did some major baking tonight before watching the Bachelorette. Although the German tradition dictates not celebrating your birthday at all prior to the actual day, we wanted to make some cupcakes and being the Americans that we are, we are just disregarding the German custom and are bringing them to school tomorrow to share. It is my personal birthday philosophy that birthday celebrations should commence several days prior to the actual date of birth and should extend however long the birthday person wants to be the center of attention. Pretty much as soon as midnight hits on June 20th I deem John's birthday officially over and ring in the new day as the focal birthday celebration recipient until sometime in early July.

Seriously.

Especially this year since we will celebrate my birthday here with friends, then in California with Margaret and John (for the actual birthday), then in CT with my family, then in DC with Cristina.

Fabulous.

Back to the current birthday girl.... take a peek at the delicousness that we made for Jill. This is a recipe from the Barefoot Contessa cookbook for chocolate cupcakes with peanut butter cream frosting. We just about died when we took the first bite!

pre-frosting

All I have to say is that we are going to be popular at school tomorrow....
the frosting is seriously amazing.
SO good!

Then since we had too much buttermilk and couldn't think of anything else to use it for, we decided to make some scones...

I actually forgot to take a photo once we baked them, but they came out delish as well!

We put dried cherries and blueberries in them with some fresh lemon zest on top.

Happy Birthday Jilly!
